Special Olympics athletes from England, Scotland and Wales are lighting up the iconic digital screen at London’s Piccadilly Circus this week thanks to the charity’s long-standing supporter Ocean Outdoor.

Special Olympics GB, which uses sport to help transform the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, is celebrating the achievements of its remarkable athletes and dedicated volunteers at the recent Berlin 2023 Special Olympics World Games in videos played on one of the most famous screens in the world.

As the biggest provider of sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities in the United Kingdom, Special Olympics GB hopes that the week-long campaign can help inspire wider participation at its 95 clubs, encourage more volunteers to create the sporting opportunities and potentially increase life-changing fundraising.

Colin Dyer, Chief Executive of Special Olympics Great Britain, said: “It’s a tremendous gesture from Ocean Outdoor to celebrate the achievements of our athletes, and their inspirational coaches, on their flagship screen at a very busy time in London.

“All of our World Summer Games athletes have been on an incredible journey and have been able to develop new skills and make huge strides in their personal development by participating in sport. We’re thrilled to see some of their journeys highlighted this week for millions of people to see.”

Special Olympics GB’s campaign with Ocean Outdoor, supported Landsec, owner of the Piccadilly Lights, began on Monday 28 August and will be live until Sunday 3 September.

It follows Ocean Outdoor’s recent collaborations with Special Olympics GB, Team GB and ParalympicsGB for its ‘This is What a Level Playing Field Looks Like’ campaign to tackle bias and discrimination, the creation of a Special Olympics GB World Games viewing zone for sports fans at Westfield London and  75th birthday celebrations of the NHS.

Kevin Henry, Head of Content & Sponsorship at Ocean Outdoor, said: “Our partnership with Special Olympics GB has allowed us to present some incredible sporting moments across our out of home screens this summer. We hope this latest celebration on the Piccadilly Lights achieves even greater recognition for people with intellectual disabilities and their participation in society.”
