Special Olympics Great Britain (GB) is proud to announce that a further 36 athletes, with an intellectual disability, graduated from its Athlete Leadership skills development programme in 2024.
The athletes were presented with their graduation certificates at the first-ever in-person Athlete Leadership Forum. Over the course of the six-month programme, participants engaged in digital workshops covering topics such as club development, fundraising, coaching, competitions, and the potential bid to host the 2031 Special Olympics World Games.
Since its inception in 2021, the Athlete Leadership programme has seen 83 athletes graduate. Delivered online, the programme is designed to enhance athletes’ independence and employability skills, while equipping them with the confidence to serve as advocates, coaches, and spokespeople for the movement.
“It’s fantastic to see the awareness of our Athlete Leadership programme continue to grow, both within and beyond the Special Olympics GB community,” said Tom Casson, Head of Projects (Impact and Inclusion) at Special Olympics GB. “More athletes graduated in 2024 than in previous years, and we’ve seen participants use the programme as a stepping stone in their own personal development journey.”
Special Olympics GB is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 Athlete Leadership Programme, which is supported by ICAP Charity Day.

We’re excited to support more athletes through the Athlete Leadership programme in 2025. We’ve just launched our registration page and hope to welcome even more athletes on their leadership journeys.
“Athletes must have a willingness to learn and be committed to completing the tasks set through the workshops. However, we strive to be flexible and accommodate all individual needs. Participants can choose to join live sessions or watch recorded workshops and complete the tasks at their own pace.”
